Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space on April 12th, 1961. The US Space Shuttle first launched on April 12th, 1981. Yuri's Night is like the St Patricks Day or Cinco de Mayo for space. It is one day when all the world can come together and celebrate the power and beauty of space and what it means for each of us. Join us!

When: Every April 12; Yuri's Night 2008 will fall on a Saturday
Where: Last year, Yuri's Night had events in 126 cities in 35 countries (including one in the Second Life virtual world)
Who: Created by Loretta Hidalgo and George Whitesides, attendance last year was in the tens of thousands
Why: Because you don't have to be a rocket scientist to be a part of the next phase of human history
History: Yuri's Night was first held in 2001, on the 40th anniversary of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's first flight into space and, coincidentally, the launching of the first space shuttle. Notable participants and speakers at Yuri's Night events over the years include Ray Bradbury, Nichelle Nichols, Lance Bass, Anousheh Ansari, Oksana Bailu, George Takei, Dennis Tito, and many astronauts, cosmonauts and NASA Center directors. The largest event of 2007 was held at the NASA Ames center with 4000 attendees, though parties ranged in size from the gigantic to the intimate.
